Cold plasma pet odor zapper
A bamboo litter box with a built-in cold plasma air cleaner that breaks down odor at the source, instead of covering it up.

The problem
You can smell a cat home from the front door
Most cat owners we've talked to say the litter box smell is the part of cat life they like least. Plenty of people without cats say they can tell someone has one the moment they walk in.
That smell comes from volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, such as ammonia and methane. They drift out of the litter box and into the rest of your home.

How it works
Cold plasma breaks odor molecules apart
Cat-ion has a small air cleaning unit built into the litter box. It uses a dielectric barrier discharge, or DBD, a type of cold plasma that runs at room temperature. The plasma oxidizes the odor compounds and turns them into gases that don't smell.
-
1
Draw it in
A quiet fan pulls air from inside the box before the smell can escape into the room.
-
2
Break it down
The air passes through the plasma unit, where odor-causing VOCs are oxidized and broken apart.
-
3
Breathe easier
What comes out is cleaner air with far less of the litter box smell.
Why not just a filter?
Filters, scented litter and sprays
- Charcoal and HEPA filters trap odor molecules until they fill up
- Scented litters absorb some odor or cover it with fragrance
- Filters and refills need replacing again and again
- Odor control is often incomplete
Cat-ion
- Breaks odor compounds down instead of storing or masking them
- No added fragrance for your cat to object to
- Built into the litter box, so the air is treated where the smell starts
- Fewer consumables to buy and replace
Today, no other litter box has a plasma odor remover built in. Plasma air cleaners are already common in homes, but none have been designed for pets until now.
Good news for multi-cat homes
Cats often won't use a litter box right after another cat has, and wait for the first cat's scent to fade. That's why homes with three cats usually end up with two or three boxes.
By clearing the smell faster, Cat-ion may help several cats share fewer boxes. We haven't tested this yet, and it's one of the things we're most excited to find out.
We are cat people
We have the same challenges you do, and we know how bad some cat odors can be. We built a system for ourselves and would love to share it with you.
Safe and effective
We care for our cats, and we would never design a system that could hurt them. It also happens to be super effective at removing odor.
Component supplier
We supply the components, and we're excited to talk with you about fitting our system into your litter box. Let us help you.

The science
Built on decades of plasma research
Our team has worked on cold plasma technology since 2002, developing it for disinfection, air and water treatment, and medical research. DBD plasma has been studied extensively, and published research shows it can inactivate a range of bacteria, viruses and spores.
Cat-ion is designed to remove odor. We make no claims that Cat-ion provides any health benefits. Proving that would take far more research and regulatory review than this product calls for.
Where we are
Proof of concept
Our bench-top prototype showed the plasma unit can break down litter box VOCs.
Prototype built
We designed and built a working bamboo litter box with the plasma unit inside.
Protected
We filed a provisional patent application on the embedded plasma technology. The Cat-ion name and logo are trademarked.
Testing
Lab tests of odor removal, plus "cat acceptance" testing to make sure there's no noise or smell that bothers cats.
Crowdfunding launch
A Kickstarter campaign to fund production and get Cat-ion into homes.
Still in development
Our litter box and the plasma air cleaning unit are under development. Whether you're a cat owner who wants to know when Cat-ion launches, or a company interested in building our plasma unit into your own litter box, get in touch with Dr. Greg Fridman.
